Abstract

Simple Summary Better tools are needed to identify animals with healthy ovaries so that farmers can make informed breeding and management decisions. This study examined the distribution of an anti-Müllerian hormone that reflects ovarian activity in the ovaries of highly productive sows and evaluated whether its expression was associated with reproductive stage, the number of eggs released during ovulation, and the number of previous pregnancies. The hormone was detected throughout follicle development. Its expression was higher in this tissue during the active luteal stage of the reproductive cycle, while younger sows appeared to exhibit higher expression in developing follicles than older sows. However, hormone expression was not related to the number of eggs released during a reproductive cycle. These findings improve our understanding of ovarian function in highly productive sows and indicate that this hormone may serve as a useful indicator of ovarian reserve and long-term reproductive potential. This knowledge may help improve breeding decisions, reproductive management, animal welfare, and the sustainability of commercial pig production.

Anti-Müllerian hormone, progesterone, and estrogen at breeding season onset and their association with reproductive performance in multiparous ewes

Findings are consistent with the proposed value of the ewe as a model of human ovarian ageing, a parallel that currently rests on phenotypic rather than established mechanistic similarity, and indicate that AMH measured before mating is associated with subsequent reproductive performance in aged multiparous ewes.

Expression of follicle stimulating and luteinizing hormone receptors in porcine testes after timing the first vaccination for immunocastration

This study aimed to examine the expression of follicle stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) and luteinizing hormone receptor (LHR) in the testes of male fattening pigs based on the timing of the first immunocastration dose. A total of 24 male pigs were randomly assigned to 3 groups: C (n=8) consisted of only intact pigs...

Embryo Ploidy and Ovarian Response in Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Antagonist Versus Progestin-Primed Ovarian Stimulation Protocols with Recombinant Luteinizing Hormone: A Within-Patient Study

OBJECTIVE: To compare embryo ploidy rates and ovarian response outcomes between gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist and progestin-primed ovarian stimulation (PPOS) cycles with recombinant luteinizing hormone (rLH) administered from stimulation onset. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective within-patient cohort s...

Changes in gene expression associated with vitamin A metabolism in the corpora lutea and endometria during d 15 of the estrous cycle and throughout gestation in gilts

Genes encoding enzymes involved in vitamin A metabolism are elevated during the period of early gestation when the anti-luteolytic mechanism of maternal recognition of pregnancy is occurring and certain genes encoding enzymes involved in vitamin A metabolism are elevated mid- to late-gestation in the endometrium of pre...

The Timing of the Preovulatory Luteinizing Hormone Surge, Follicular Dynamics, and Ovulation Time Observed with Ultrasonoghraphy in Arbia Goats

This study aimed to determine luteinizing hormone preovulatory release, follicular dynamics, and ovulation in Arbia breed goats. Estrus was induced during the non-breeding season using progesterone, pregnant mare serum gonadotropin, and prostaglandin. Blood samples and ovarian transrectal ultrasound scanning were perfo...

The estradiol-to-periovulatory follicle ratio (E2/N16) as a marker of follicular endocrine efficiency and embryological outcomes in ART cycles

The estradiol-to-periovulatory follicle ratio (E2/N16) was independently associated with embryo yield and provided information complementary to conventional quantitative measures of ovarian response and should be interpreted as a simple linear marker of ovarian steroidogenesis.
