TL;DR

This study investigated the association between admission hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia, and the need for IMV within the first 24 hours of intensive care unit (ICU) admission within the first 24 hours of sepsis admission.

Abstract

Aims: Electrolyte disturbances are common in patients with sepsis and may impair respiratory muscle function, increasing the need for invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). However, the impact of admission hypophosphatemia and hypokalemia on early IMV need in patients with sepsis remains incompletely understood. This study aimed to investigate the association between admission hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia, and the need for IMV within the first 24 hours of intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included adult patients with sepsis admitted to the ICU from January 2020 to March 2026. Hypophosphatemia was defined as a serum phosphate level

Hypophosphatemia and adverse composite outcome in mechanically ventilated critically Ill children: A single-center retrospective cohort study

Aim: Hypophosphatemia may impair diaphragmatic contractility and prolong weaning from mechanical ventilation, but pediatric prognostic data are scarce. Materials and Methods: This single-center retrospective cohort included 206 children (1 month – 18 years) invasively ventilated for at least 48 hours (April 2024 – Janu...

Management of severe hyponatremia: impact of guideline adherence on clinical outcomes

Hyponatremia is the most common electrolyte disorder in hospitalized patients. Severe forms are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Despite clear guideline recommendations, adherence to diagnostic and therapeutic standards is often insufficient. We analysed management of severe hyponatremia at a te...

Clinical Outcomes of Hospitalization for Severe Hyperkalemia in the Absence of Life-threatening Manifestations

Introduction: Severe hyperkalemia warrants immediate hospitalization for patients with acute instability. However, the benefit of inpatient care in the absence of acute instability remains poorly defined. We therefore evaluated clinical outcomes across clinical settings for these patients. Methods: This two-center retr...

Impact of Early Follow-Up on Readmissions in Chronic Hypercapnic Respiratory Failure Patients on Non-Invasive Ventilation Therapy

Acute on chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure is a severe manifestation of multiple disease pathways, including but not limited to primary pulmonary diseases, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, and neuromuscular diseases. It is associated with high mortality, increased healthcare utilization, and frequent hospita...
