Abstract
Effective lesson planning is a core professional practice in teaching, yet many educators struggle to move beyond procedural completion of templates toward evidence-based alignment of learning outcomes, activities, and assessments. This paper synthesises insights from the philosophy of education, instructional design theory, cognitive psychology, and formative assessment research to propose a principled framework for lesson planning. Drawing on the concept of teaching as purposeful interaction and the distinction between visible instructional structures and deep learning processes, the paper argues that alignment must operate at multiple levels: outcome-ability congruence using contemporary cognitive taxonomies, outcome-activity correspondence grounded in cognitive load theory and multimodal learning principles, and outcome-assessment consistency through embedded formative practices. The paper refines earlier oversimplifications regarding sensory modality use, drawing on multisensory learning research to advocate strategic alternation rather than rigid exclusion of modalities. Implications for teacher education include the need to develop deep pedagogical reasoning rather than procedural compliance, while future research should investigate how novice teachers acquire alignment competence across different subject areas and digital learning environments. The paper concludes that when lesson planning is treated as a testable hypothesis rather than a fixed script, it becomes a powerful vehicle for cumulative professional growth.
This narrative review synthesises the theoretical and empirical literature on lesson planning across general education, English Language Teaching (ELT), and English for Academic Purposes (EAP). A structured search of Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, and Google Scholar, supplemented by backward reference tracing, identified an initial pool of over 1,200 records. After title and abstract screening against predefined inclusion criteria and full-text evaluation, 56 sources were retained for thematic analysis through a two-phase iterative design. Three research questions are addressed: (1) how the four core dimensions of lesson planning, learner needs, learning objectives, instructional materials, and formative assessment, are conceptualised within systematic instructional design; (2) what structural, institutional, and geopolitical tensions constrain planning practice across varied global contexts; and (3) how Generative AI tools and collaborative reflective models redefine teacher agency, cognitive load, and professional autonomy during the planning process. Findings indicate that the effectiveness of lesson planning depends less on plan format than on the professional culture and cognitive conditions within which planning takes place. The review argues that Cognitive Load Theory bridges reflective practice and critical pedagogy, that agency in under-resourced contexts resides in the reflective adaptation of structured plans rather than their rejection, and that GenAI tools function as mechanisms of either domestication or emancipation depending on the reflective framing of their use. Implications for teacher education and future research are identified.

The present research analyzes to what degree ‘learning by doing’ approaches are applied in the didactic planning of student teachers. Based on a constructivist-experiential paradigm, the study emphasizes that lesson planning is a reflective and evaluative action which displays pedagogical comprehension. A research-based qualitative documentary method was used to study five lesson plans with two reliable observation instruments. For quantitative scoring, attention was directed to items involving experiential structure and methodological coherence, whereas qualitative analysis identified themes of conceptual triangulation in which activities, resources and evaluation approaches were mutually associated. Results suggest that some lesson plans are well aligned with the experience, reflection, conceptualization, application framework, while others indicate a lack of bridging of theory to practice. Plans that scored highest used integrated themes and cohesive sequencing, while those that scored lowest were minimally evaluated and resource minimally aligned. The research fills important gaps in the literature for providing empirical findings on the implementation of experiential learning in the context of the Latin-American teacher education scene, as well as for discussing observation guides as an indication of meta-evaluation and staff training. This study provides an expandable and thought-provoking structure for enhancing the quality of didactic planning in teacher education, drawing attention to the ethical role of deliberate instructional design in supporting meaningful and effective learning.

Despite a substantial body of literature emphasizing the value of practitioner-led action research (AR) for professional growth and educational improvement, in-service teachers and education students (pre-service to postgraduate) consistently demonstrate low rates of independent research engagement. This paper argues that this gap reflects not merely systemic barriers such as time scarcity and limited institutional support, but a cognitive-procedural deficit: novice researchers lack the structured scaffolding needed to translate abstract AR methodology into concrete classroom inquiry. Drawing on Vygotskian scaffolding theory, Merrill's First Principles of Instruction, and Cognitive Load Theory, this paper describes the design and development of an Action Research Workbook that integrates the iterative Plan-Act-Observe-Reflect cycle of AR with structured instructional design principles such as ADDIE and the Successive Approximation Model (SAM). Each workbook chapter follows a consistent five-part sequence (Purpose, Example of Writing, Guiding Questions, Footnote Guide and Writing Space, and Reflection Prompts) intended to reduce procedural uncertainty for novice researchers. The workbook's structure was developed through document analysis of established action research manuals and refined through expert review by approximately ten university lecturers in educational research, curriculum development, instructional design, and teacher education, and is currently undergoing pilot implementation with Master of Science Education students. This paper contributes a theoretically grounded, practice-oriented design account intended to inform future empirical evaluation of structured scaffolding tools for practitioner research. The workbook further situates practitioner inquiry within its ethical dimensions, addressing the dual-role conflict practitioners face when studying their own classrooms and embedding reflection prompts that foster guided reflexivity. Findings from the ongoing pilot implementation are expected to inform future large-scale effectiveness studies across diverse educational settings.

Centrally developed English lesson plans provide structure and ensure curriculum coverage, yet they can constrain preservice teachers' creativity, responsiveness, and capacity to engage students meaningfully. Although this tension is well documented, there is limited practical guidance for teacher educators in University Teacher Preparation Programs. This article addresses this gap by sharing practical strategies grounded in theory and existing research through a practitioner inquiry. This inquiry examines how coaching, framed by Wassermann's idea of the organic literacy classroom, supports preservice teachers in working within and beyond standardized curriculum materials. Drawing on survey data, alongside observational and reflective data generated from university tutorials and school‐based experiences, the article illustrates how coaching and rehearsal with Year 1 English lesson plans enable preservice teachers to identify pedagogical entry points for responsive, student‐centered teaching. In doing so, the article offers practice‐based insights for teacher educators, demonstrating how prescriptive materials can be worked with—rather than resisted—to create opportunities for meaningful, joyful literacy learning that balances curriculum intent with student voice, agency, and choice. It highlights the critical role of teacher educators in supporting preservice teachers as they navigate, interpret, and adapt these materials.
Cognitive maps are pedagogical tools that visually organize knowledge by integrating cognitive and metacognitive elements to assist teachers in instructional design. Research indicates that constructing these visual models enhances learners’ understanding, retention, and application of knowledge and skills. For educators, the mapping process stimulates higher-order thinking during lesson planning, offering a panoramic, integrative view of the subject matter. While applicable across diverse disciplines, we specifically examine how cognitive maps can be integrated into physical education. We present this approach as an auxiliary tool for instructional planning in physical education lessons, detailing the rationale behind its use and synthesizing five empirical studies that evaluated its effectiveness in school classes and in teacher training programs. These investigations focus on combining cognitive mapping with pedagogical methods that maximize its benefits. To illustrate practical application, we present four interconnected cognitive maps that demonstrate hierarchical structure and crosslinking across topics. We then provide concrete examples of a single lesson plan alongside a six-lesson progressive unit centered on three-player coordination in basketball offense and defense. Finally, we address potential implementation challenges in physical-education settings and propose a number of practical solutions.
מפות קוגניטיביות (cognitive maps) הן כלי פדגוגי המשמש לניתוח ולארגון של ידע גרפי המשלב יסודות ויזואליים, קוגניטיביים ומטה-קוגניטיביים בעלי פוטנציאל לסייע למורה לתכנן את עבודתו. מחקרים מצביעים על כך שיצירת מפות קוגניטיביות מטפחת הבנה, זכירה ויישום של ידע ומיומנויות בקרב הלומדים. תהליך היצירה של מפות קוגניטיביות מזמן למורה תרגול של חשיבה מסדר גבוה בעת תכנון ההוראה. המפה משמשת ככלי לארגון ידע ולייצוגו הגרפי, ובכך מאפשרת מבט פנורמי ואינטגרטיבי על החומר הנלמד. השימוש במפות קוגניטיביות יכול לקדם הוראה במגוון של מקצועות לימוד. במאמר זה אנו בוחנים כיצד ניתן לשלב מפות קוגניטיביות בתכנון של שיעורי חינוך גופני. ביתר פירוט, אנו מציגים את גישת המפות הקוגניטיביות ככלי עזר לתכנון ההוראה בשיעורי חינוך גופני ואת הרציונל לשימוש בו. אנו סוקרים כמה מחקרים שבחנו את יעילות הגישה בשיעורי חינוך גופני ובתוכניות הכשרת סטודנטים להוראת חינוך גופני. במחקרים אלו היה המיקוד על שילוב של מפות קוגניטיביות עם דרכי הוראה המאפשרות ניצול מיטבי של יתרונות המפות הקוגניטיביות. נוסף על כך, אנו מדגימים את יישום הגישה בשיעורי חינוך גופני בעזרת ארבע מפות קוגניטיביות המבליטות תכנון היררכי בכל מפה וקישורים צולבים בין המפות. לאחר מכן, אנו מציגים במאמר דוגמה של מערך שיעור אחד ויחידת הוראה מתפתחת הכוללת שישה שיעורים העוסקים בנושא לימודי אחד: תיאום שלשות בהתקפה ובהגנה בכדורסל. בחלק האחרון של המאמר אנו דנים בכמה אתגרים פוטנציאליים ביישום מפות קוגניטיביות בחינוך גופני ומציעים כמה פתרונות לאתגרים אלו.

This study investigates the implementation of Mindful, Meaningful, and Joyful Learning (MMJL) principles within the Merdeka Curriculum framework in English language teaching at SDN 01 Pijot Utara. The research subjects consisted of a sixth-grade English teacher who served as both the designer of the Teaching Module and the classroom practitioner, along with sixth-grade students as secondary participants. Adopting a qualitative descriptive case study design grounded in Policy Enactment theory, data were collected through document analysis of the Teaching Module and systematic classroom observations. The findings reveal that while the MMJL principles are thoroughly embedded in the macro-structural design of the Teaching Module and successfully enacted during foundational and receptive instructional phases, a significant divergence occurs during productive phases. Activities demanding student autonomy, such as independent writing, reflection, and collaborative summarization, were only partially enacted, largely due to a lack of anticipatory scaffolding in the written plan and the persistence of teacher-centered norms intended to manage classroom silence. The study concludes that although MMJL principles effectively support classroom management and emotional well-being, their potential to drive higher-order intellectual engagement remains constrained by the gap between policy intentions and classroom realities. Practically, this research contributes to curriculum development and teacher training by recommending that Teaching Modules evolve into dynamic pedagogical instruments, supplemented by anticipatory scaffolds and differentiated strategies, to bridge the distance between curriculum vision and practice.
