Rapid urbanization in Malang City, East Java, has increased flood exposure along the Bareng River, where dense riparian settlements restrict channel conveyance. This study integrates hydrological–hydraulic modeling and spatial exposure assessment to support flood-hazard-based spatial planning. Design rainfall (2–100-year return periods) was estimated using the Log Pearson Type III distribution, and design flood discharge was derived using the Gama 1 Synthetic Unit Hydrograph. A coupled one-dimensional–two-dimensional HEC-RAS model, developed from a UAV-derived Digital Surface Model, simulated the 2-year (Q2) design flood. Results show that the channel generally conveys the Q2 discharge, but a constricted middle reach produces localized overbank flow, resulting in 2.47 ha of inundation with depths of 0.03–0.91 m. Validation against 10 years of flood records from the Malang City Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) yielded F_Bates = 0.88 and F_Di Baldassarre = 0.77. F_Bates was adopted as the primary planning indicator because it reduces underestimation of flood-prone areas, while uncertainty buffers are recommended to account for limited rainfall records and boundary-condition uncertainty. The modeled inundation affects 213 buildings, predominantly residential (85%), providing a basis for proposed flood hazard zoning to inform future revisions of the Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW) and Detailed Spatial Plan (RDTR).
Flooding has become a major environmental issue in rapidly developing urban areas due to increasing rainfall intensity. This study develops an integrated analytical framework to analyse the relationship between rainfall variability, water discharge, flood inundation, and flood hazard modeling in the Molibagu River wate...

Flood hazard maps are a basic instrument of disaster risk management, yet their preparation normally assumes that streamflow, water level and inundation records are available for model calibration. This study therefore aims to establish a flood hazard mapping framework for data-scarce basins, and to examine how far the...

Predicting flood dynamics in data-scarce urban catchments remains a major hydrological challenge, yet physically-based modeling is essential for design mitigation infrastructure. This study assessed the impact of land cover change on the hydrological response and hydraulic performance of the ungauged Kinalumsan River i...

The Swat River Basin (SRB), a mountainous sub-catchment of the Indus Basin, has faced frequent floods in the past 25 years. Limited structural and non-structural measures, such as flood risk mapping, early warning systems, and land use planning, continue to expose the SRB. This study assessed and mapped riverine floo...

Flood hazard assessment is crucial for effective disaster management and vulnerability zonation, particularly in areas prone to excessive rainfall events. This study integrates the HEC-RAS 2D with the Rain-On-Grid (ROG) technique to simulate rainfall-induced flooding in Abbottabad city and its vicinity. The ROG appro...

Padang City experiences recurrent flooding because intense rainfall, rapid runoff from eastern catchments, low-lying floodplains, and coastal-estuarine backwater effects interact across a developed watershed continuum. Existing assessments often examine rainfall, runoff response, spatial hazard, and ecological function...
