Exploring the Challenges Facing Political Parties in Nigeria

Sep 2026 · Journal of Arts and Sociological Research · 0 citations

Abstract

The paper critically examined the evolution, internal dynamics, and enduring challenges that confronted political parties within Nigeria’s democratic landscape. It traced their historical roots from anti-colonial nationalism to contemporary governance, highlighting how political parties had served as instruments of civic engagement and political representation. However, systemic deficiencies such as weak institutional frameworks, ethno-religious fragmentation, elite dominance, and dependency on external resources continued to impede party development and undermine democratic consolidation. The study adopted a qualitative research design and relied on both secondary data including scholarly literature, party constitutions, electoral reports, and policy documents and primary data obtained through key informant interviews with party officials, political analysts, and civil society actors. Data were analyzed thematically to identify recurring patterns, contradictions, and structural weaknesses across party systems. Using a multi-theoretical lens comprising Institutional Theory, Modernization Theory, Dependency Theory, and Neopatrimonialism Theory, the study unpacked how institutional weaknesses, socio-economic inequalities, and clientelistic networks eroded internal democracy and effective representation. Key issues analyzed included the lack of ideological clarity, prevalence of money politics, internal party autocracy, political defection, and the persistent exclusion of marginalized groups such as women, youth, ethnic minorities, and persons with disabilities. The paper advocated for comprehensive reforms aimed at promoting transparency, ideological consistency, inclusivity, civic education, and structural democratization within party systems. These reforms were deemed essential for political parties to regain public trust, strengthen democratic institutions, and serve as credible vehicles for national development and inclusive governance in Nigeria.
