A symptom-level perspective on the associations among school bullying victimisation, PLEs, depressive symptoms, and NSSI among Chinese students is provided to inform future screening, risk assessment, and longitudinal research.

Abstract

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a major public health concern. While several factors have been associated with NSSI, their complex interactions and joint effects on NSSI remain unclear. This study examined the factors associated with NSSI using network analysis. This cross-sectional study included 15,968 students aged 12–24 years from Hunan province, China, selected using convenience sampling between October 2021 and October 2022. An online questionnaire was administered to collect information on students’ demographics, school bullying victimisation, psychotic-like experiences (PLEs), depressive symptoms, and NSSI. Network analysis was employed to explore the relationships among these factors and identify highly connected or bridge nodes. The chain mediation model was used to assess the mediating factors between school bullying victimisation and NSSI. The network did not exhibit isolated nodes and demonstrated robust connectivity. Node P12 (distracted by distant sounds) showed the highest strength centrality. Nodes P14 (paranoid thoughts) and D9 (suicidal ideation) showed relatively high bridge strength, suggesting their potential role in cross-domain connectivity. Moreover, the verbal bullying victimisation node showed no direct link to any of the NSSI indicators. Instead, PLEs and depressive symptoms served as chain mediators, linking verbal bullying victimisation to NSSI. These findings provide a symptom-level perspective on the associations among school bullying victimisation, PLEs, depressive symptoms, and NSSI among Chinese students. Highly connected and bridge nodes may inform future screening, risk assessment, and longitudinal research.

How negative life events and emotion regulation difficulties are associated with non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents: A dimension-level network analysis and the role of physical activity.

It is suggested that early identification and prevention of NSSI among adolescents should consider both external stressors, such as punishment-related stress, and internal regulatory vulnerabilities, particularly limited access to effective emotion regulation strategies.

Childhood maltreatment and adolescent non-suicidal self-injury: cross-sectional conditional process and network analyses of depressive symptoms and physical activity

Background Childhood maltreatment is associated with adolescent non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), but the roles of depressive symptoms and physical activity remain unclear. We examined these relationships using variable-level and network approaches. Methods This cross-sectional study included 2,354 adolescents recruited...

The moderated mediation effect of physical activity on non-suicidal self-injury: the mediating role of perceived stress and the moderating role of parental support

PA serves as a potential protective factor negatively associated with NSSI through both direct and indirect statistical pathways, and parental support significantly moderated the mediated process.

Depressive Symptoms Mediate the Association Between Family Functioning and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury in Adolescent Psychiatric Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is highly prevalent among adolescent psychiatric patients, yet the pathways linking family functioning to NSSI have not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to investigate whether depressive symptoms function as a mediator in the association between family functioning and...

Physical exercise and psychological resilience in the link between adverse childhood experiences and non-suicidal self-injury: chain mediation and network analysis in college students

This study supported the statistical indirect roles of physical exercise and psychological resilience in the association between adverse childhood experiences and non-suicidal self-injury, and suggested that “pinching” was a noteworthy symptom in the NSSI behavioral network.
