Abstract

Let $G$ be a countable locally finite abelian group, and let \[ G_1\leq G_2\leq\cdots, \qquad \bigcup_{i\geq1}G_i=G, \] be any filtration of $G$ by finite subgroups. For $A\subseteq G$, let $\mathcal P(A)$ denote the set of all finite subset sums of elements of $A$, and let $2G:=\{2g:g\in G\}$. We prove that $|2G|=\infty$ if and only if for every filtration and every interval $[\alpha,\beta]\subseteq[0,1]$, there exists $A\subseteq G$ such that the set of limit points of \[ \left( \frac{|\mathcal P(A)\cap G_i|}{|G_i|} \right)_{i\geq1} \] is exactly $[\alpha,\beta]$. We also prove a positive-density result that does not require $|2G|=\infty$: if $G$ is infinite and $\mathcal P(A)$ has positive upper density along the given filtration, then there is an infinite set $B\subseteq \mathcal P(A)$ such that $B+B\subseteq \mathcal P(A)$. Combining this with the realization theorem, we show that, when $|2G|=\infty$, every interval $[\alpha,\beta]$ with $0\leq\alpha\leq\beta\leq1$ and $\beta>0$ can be realized by a set $A$ with this additional property.

Spectral Algebras of Abelian Cayley Graphs

Let $G$ be a finite abelian group of order $N$, $S \subseteq G \setminus \{0\}$ a symmetric connection set, and $K$ a field with $char(K) \nmid N$. The spectral algebra $\mathscr{A_K}(Cay(G,S)) = K[A]$ generated by the adjacency matrix of the Cayley graph is proved to decompose, via the character-orbit decomposition, a...

Strongly small-2 sets that are not Riesz sets on compact abelian groups

We prove that every infinite compact abelian group $G$ admits a countably infinite proper set $E\subset\widehat G$ that is strongly small-2 but not Riesz. More precisely, $|\alpha|*|\beta|$ is absolutely continuous for all $\alpha,\beta\in M_E(G)$, whereas $M_E(G)$ contains a singular complex measure of total mass one...

Counting number fields with symplectic Galois group

Let $n\geq 1$ and let $\ell$ be an odd prime. Let $G=\mathrm{PGSp}_{2n}(\mathbb{F}_\ell)$ or $\mathrm{GSp}_{2n}(\mathbb{F}_\ell)$, and fix a faithful transitive permutation representation $\pi:G\longrightarrow S_d$. We study degree-$d$ number fields whose Galois closures have Galois group $G$ and whose associated permu...

The fields generated by character values of linear and unitary groups

For a finite group $G$, define the field $\mathbb{Q}(G) := \mathbb{Q}(\{\chi(g) : \chi \in \operatorname{Irr}(G) , g \in G\})$. In this article we compute generating sets for the fields $\mathbb{Q}(G)$ when $G$ is a finite general or special linear group, a finite general or special unitary group, or one of the simple...

Asymptotic Schur orthogonality for lattices

Let $\pi:G\to \mathcal{U}(L^{2}(G/P,\nu))$ be the boundary representation of a non-compact connected semisimple Lie group $G$ with finite center on its Furstenberg-Poisson boundary $(G/P,\nu)$. Let $\Gamma\subset G$ be a lattice in $G$ (uniform or not). We show that for any \emph{continuous} functions $\varphi,\psi,\va...

Random Cayley sum hypergraphs and $k$-fold sumsets

We denote by $f_k(\Gamma)$ the largest integer with the property that every subset of a finite abelian group $\Gamma$ of size at least $|\Gamma| - f_k(\Gamma)$ is a $k$-fold sumset. Extending a recent result of Alon and Pham, we prove that $$ f_k(\Gamma) \leq \widetilde{O} \left(n^{(2k-1)/(4k-3)}\right) $$ holds for al...
