Abstract

Research has mainly focused on dyadic trust relationships between individual humans and robots. However, in real-world applications, multiple humans interact with the same robot over time, creating opportunities for third-party influences on trust. This study investigates whether a human third party can influence a new human trustor’s perceived trust in a robot trustee. We conducted a between-subjects experiment with 24 participants, using a humanoid robot. Results show that the experimental group exhibited significantly higher trust levels after the robot successfully completed the task again. Interestingly, we did not find a significant difference directly after the intervention, which we used after a failure to repair trust. These findings suggest that trust in human-robot dyads is not isolated but can be influenced by social dynamics. This has important implications for both research, highlighting the need for standardized researcher behavior, and practice, indicating that trust in robots may be interconnected across workforces.

Trust in Social Robots: Experimental Outcomes and Interactional Trajectories

This study examines interactions between students and a social robot in an experiment designed to explore students' trust in educational robots. In the experiment, 16 out of 22 students come to accept an erroneous solution to a mathematical task presented by the robot, even though the vast majority of students initiall...

Flattery from robots, praise from humans: building consumer trust and comfort

This study aims to investigate how the interaction between service agent type (robot vs human) and language style (flattery vs praise) influences customers’ psychological comfort, alongside the dual mediating roles of affective and cognitive trust and the moderating role of emotional sensitivity. Drawing on...

A Humanoid Robot Morphology Does Not Always Lead To A Higher Perception Of Anthropomorphism And Trust

Trust is an important aspect that influences the outcome of human-robot collaborations. Robots with a humanoid morphology might influence perceptions of trust. In this paper, we provide a comparison of two robots, one with a humanoid and one with a technical morphology, performing a collaborative task. In addition to i...

Strategic Companions: Behavioral Evidence of Trust and Reciprocity in Human-Robot Economic Games

We study trust and reciprocity in human-robot interaction using behavioral economic games. In Study $1 (\mathrm{N}=42)$, participants played a three-round trust game both with a human and a LuxAI QT robot, as sender or receiver. Senders invested comparable amounts in human and robot partners, but receivers returned sig...

Human-Quadruped Robot Interaction: Trust and Perceptions under Teleoperated and Semi-Autonomous Control

Understanding human perceptions of quadruped robots is essential for their successful integration into public environments. While substantial human-robot interaction (HRI) research focuses on humanoid robots, research on humanquadruped robot interaction is limited. This study examines how control type, movement speed,...

Trust in Robots: Aligning with Misaligned actions

How, in human–robot interaction, robots enact actions programmed to resemble human interactional competence and how the participants align with the misaligned actions while managing the activities that the robots initiate is observed.
