Abstract
Sustainable environmental management represents one of the key challenges of modern society, driven by increasing pressures of economic development on natural resources and ecosystems. The aim of this paper is to analyze the theoretical and economic principles that form the foundation of sustainable management, as well as to examine their application within public policy frameworks. The paper is based on the assumption that effective environmental management requires an integrated approach encompassing economic instruments, institutional mechanisms, and social change. The theoretical section analyzes key principles, including sustainable development, the precautionary principle, the "polluter pays" principle, and the concept of the tragedy of the commons. Special attention is given to economic instruments such as environmental taxes, subsidies, and market-based mechanisms, which aim to internalize externalities and encourage sustainable behavior among economic actors. The role of institutional frameworks and public policies in implementing these principles is also examined, with an emphasis on the importance of international cooperation and multi-level governance. The paper highlights numerous challenges, including the conflict between short-term economic interests and long-term environmental goals, insufficient institutional efficiency, and global development inequalities. Based on the conducted analysis, recommendations are formulated to improve environmental management systems, including strengthening institutional capacities, enhancing regulatory frameworks, developing green technologies, and increasing public participation. In conclusion, sustainable environmental management requires continuous adaptation and coordination among various stakeholders, along with the integration of economic, environmental, and social objectives in order to achieve long-term sustainability.
