Abstract

Infections by free-living amoebae cause an acute condition of intracranial hypertension that is difficult to manage. In Peru, the most reported species are Balamuthia spp, Acanthamoeba spp and Naegleria spp. A pediatric patient with torpid evolution is reported. The objective is to describe this aggressive condition to be able to use it in the differential of a patient with a brain tumor. This is a descriptive, observational, retrospective study, information was obtained from the clinical history of a patient treated during the month of May 2023 at the Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen National Hospital (HNGAI), intensive medical and surgical treatment was received while hospitalized in intensive care, showing sustained intracranial hypertension, the context of the patient is highlighted, who comes from a rural area, immunosuppressed, and anemic, creating the ideal environment to allow the described infection, concluding that greater knowledge of the context and the condition in which it occurs must be had. Health personnel must suspect an infection by these pathogens in order to provide early treatment, improving prognosis and survival.
