Abstract
The volumetric reduction characteristic of distinct Topology Optimization (TO) techniques is attractive to both academia and industry applications. Furthermore, structural reinforcement provides an economically viable alternative to improve the mechanical properties of parts, inducing greater performance in engineering designs. This study presents a topology optimization formulation for reinforced domains based on the Level Set Method (LSM). The coupling between the Isogeometric Boundary Element Method (IGABEM) and a one-dimensional Boundary Element Method (1DBEM) for truss elements evaluates the mechanical quantities required to construct the LSM velocity field. The IGABEM represents the mechanical behavior of the solid matrix at each optimization iteration, while a 1DBEM simulates the mechanical behavior of the reinforcements. The same isogeometric mesh defines the contour of the level set function and also serves as the IGABEM mechanical mesh. Thus, the formulation avoids approximations between the geometric and mechanical descriptions of the problem. The augmented Lagrangian method defines the optimization problem of compliance minimization and assists in constructing the normal boundary velocity field through shape derivative. Moreover, a heuristic topology modification criterion overcomes the LSM deficiency regarding cavities generation. Finally, numerical examples demonstrate the formulation robustness and compare the resulting final geometries with those obtained by TO without reinforcement.
This paper presents an effective isogeometric proportional topology optimization (IPTO) approach for the topology optimization of gradient-elastic thin plates. The structural model is formulated by incorporating Kirchhoff–Love (KL) plate kinematics into the simplified strain-gradient elasticity theory (SSGT). The corre...

The paper investigates the influence of rational displacement of boundary conditions on the results of topological optimization of structures. It is shown that the traditional approach, which assumes a fixed position of loads and supports, may not consider a significant potential for improving the optimality criterion...

Topology optimization and additive manufacturing complement each other: the freedom offered by design optimization enables the creation of complex, highly efficient structures that are often feasible only with additive manufacturing. However, most structural optimization methods assume isotropic material properties,...

Topology optimization (TO) can be applied to continuum structures to generate efficient designs accounting for performance measures, such as compliance. However, the resulting solutions are often sensitive to the occurrence of local damage, which can be modeled by removing a group of elements from the optimized configu...

Topology of grids is a key aspect in the design of architectural structures: the beams’ connectivity is related to the structure’s geometry and influences its performance. This article proposes a new method for generating a space of quad mesh topologies controlled by continuous parameters on the boundary. It uses gradi...
