Code for GRACE-constrained hydrological model niches and water-storage reconstruction

Sep 2026 · Figshare

Abstract

This software accompanies the study of persistent and transferable hydrological model niches among nine global water models. It uses terrestrial water-storage observations from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and GRACE Follow-On missions to estimate regional model contributions and evaluate whether the resulting geography of relative skill recurs through time and transfers to independent process observations. The Python code covers observation and model-data preparation, temporally blocked model selection and evaluation, estimation of persistent regional weights and monthly adjustments, and model-based water-storage reconstruction for 1901–2019. Statistical analyses examine temporal recurrence, groundwater and surface-water comparisons, environmental associations, regional model choice, low-storage performance, historical predictor support and held-out model–observation residuals. Plotting and table-building scripts connect these analyses to the manuscript figures, supplementary tables and graphical abstract. The archive includes analysis configurations, dependency and environment records, tests, and SLURM scripts for computationally intensive training and reconstruction. Figures and tables can be reproduced from the accompanying source data without repeating model training; selected maps also require the documented geographical boundary files. Repeating the full analysis requires the original observational and model inputs from their providers. The accompanying documentation identifies the software entry points, input requirements and relationships between numerical source files and scientific displays.

The impact of agile practices on communication in software development

The study shows that agile practices improve both informal and formal communication, but indicates that, in larger development situations involving multiple external stakeholders, a mismatch of adequate communication mechanisms can sometimes even hinder the communication.

Agile methods in European embedded software development organisations: a survey on the actual use and usefulness of Extreme Programming and Scrum

The results show that the embedded industry has been able to apply agile methods in its development processes and that the appreciation of the agile methods and their individual practices appears to increase once adopted and applied in practice.

Requirements Don’t Live in Isolation: What We’re Exploring with Req-Space

Requirements in large systems rarely exist in isolation. Their meaning depends on the wider project context - other requirements, policies, decisions, tests, and implementation details. That becomes especially important when AI is used for review, because spotting a possible conflict or gap is only the beginning. ReqSpace explores how AI, visualisation, and connected project context can help reviewers understand those findings, trace the relationships behind them, and focus on the questions that…

Beyond Prompt Engineering: The Role of Tacit Knowledge in Software Engineering

AI is making software generation faster, but speed does not remove the need for expertise. As more work is delegated to AI, tacit knowledge may become one of the most important human advantages in software engineering.
