Abstract
This study examines how the local wisdom embedded in the Kasada tradition can be transformed into a contextual source of tolerance education for Muslim students. Using a qualitative descriptive design with a case-study approach, the study draws on interviews with traditional community leaders, teachers, and students, as well as direct observation and documentation within the social and cultural context of the Tengger community in the Mount Bromo region of East Java, Indonesia. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings reveal three interconnected dimensions of tolerance reflected in Kasada and Tengger social life: religious respect, intercommunal cooperation, and shared cultural belonging. These values are expressed through the recognition of religious differences, mutual assistance across community boundaries, and the maintenance of a shared cultural identity despite theological diversity. The study further proposes a pedagogical transformation consisting of four processes: contextual introduction, cultural encounter, reflective interpretation, and collaborative application. Through these processes, Kasada can function as a living pedagogical resource that enables Muslim students to understand tolerance through culturally grounded social practices without requiring participation in the ritual dimensions of the tradition. The study contributes to local-wisdom-based tolerance education by connecting the lived tolerance of the Tengger community with contextual pedagogical practices for Muslim students.
