Digitalization and Climate-Smart-Technologies Drive Sustainable Rural Women Entrepreneurship

Abstract

Globalization is reshaping rural economies through digital transformation and increasing environmental pressures, creating both opportunities and challenges for women-led entrepreneurship. In this context, technological innovation has emerged as a key mechanism for promoting sustainability, competitiveness, and inclusion. The objective of this study is to analyze two emerging global trends—namely inclusive digitalization and climate-smart technologies—and their implications for rural women entrepreneurship within a prospective horizon of 2026–2031. The research adopts a qualitative approach with an interpretative and prospective orientation, based on documentary analysis of academic literature and international institutional reports. The findings reveal that inclusive digitalization facilitates market access, enhances business visibility, and improves productivity by enabling rural women entrepreneurs to overcome structural and geographical barriers. At the same time, climate-smart technologies contribute to strengthening resilience and sustainability in rural production systems by optimizing resource use and improving adaptive capacity in the face of climate change. However, the results also indicate that persistent structural inequalities, particularly in terms of gender, access to technology, and digital capabilities, continue to limit the full potential of these innovations. The study concludes that technological innovation plays a multidimensional role in rural development, simultaneously influencing economic performance, environmental sustainability, and social equity. It also highlights the need for inclusive innovation ecosystems and targeted policies to ensure that technological transformation leads to equitable and sustainable outcomes for rural women entrepreneurs.

From Tradition to Technology: Transforming Rural Livelihoods through Digital Innovation

In Present scenario Digital innovation has emerged as a crucial role for transforming rural livelihoods by enhancing access to information, markets, financial services, and entrepreneurial opportunities. The present study directly focused on the direct of impact of digital innovation on rural livelihood improvement and testing the relationship between awareness and accessibility of digital technologies with the adoption of technology-based livelihood activities. The study is based on primary data collected from 150 rural respondents of Bhadrak district using a structured questionnaire with a three-point Likert scale. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, including weighted mean, chi-square test, correlation, and linear regression analysis, were applied to analyze the data. The findings indicate that digital tools such as mobile internet, online marketing platforms, and digital payment systems significantly contribute to increased productivity, better market access, and improved income levels in rural areas. The study concludes that strengthening digital literacy, infrastructure, and awareness initiatives is essential for promoting technology-enabled livelihood opportunities and achieving sustainable rural economic development.

Bridging Green Innovation and Real World Implementation in Nepal for a Sustainable and Inclusive Future

Green innovation is vital for tackling climate change and promoting sustainable development, especially in least developed countries like Nepal, which faces unique socioeconomic and environmental hurdles. Despite commitments under the Nationally Determined Contributions, there is a significant gap between the development and practical implementation of green innovations. This study analyses the factors contributing to this gap and proposes a green growth framework that balances economic, social, and environmental priorities. Employing qualitative methods, the research involved content analysis of semistructured interviews with six experts during the OCEM Second International Conference on Green Technologies and Sustainability for a Sustainable Future. Key findings indicate that the practical application of green innovations is hindered by weak policy enforcement, limited institutional coordination, inadequate financial incentives, and poor linkages among research institutions, educational systems, and industry. Although there is growing awareness of environmental sustainability and increased individual adoption of green practices, systemic barriers such as outdated curricula, lack of technical standards, and insufficient knowledge dissemination impede large-scale implementation. The study also highlights the underutilisation of indigenous knowledge and locally adapted, low-cost solutions as missed opportunities to bolster resilience and sustainability, particularly in rural areas. The findings, informed by political ecology and socio-technical transition theory, suggest that the main challenges stem from structural and governance-related issues rather than technological shortcomings. The study concludes that fostering green growth in Nepal requires integrated policy frameworks, enhanced institutional capacity, inclusive governance, and collaboration among academia, industry, communities, and policymakers to bridge the gap between innovation and practice, thereby supporting equitable and context-sensitive development

Digitalization in sustainable development: navigating green innovation in small and medium enterprises

Digital transformation and digital leadership are widely cited antecedents of sustainability. Yet the micro-level mechanisms by which they operate, and the boundary conditions that amplify them, remain theoretically underspecified. Drawing on resource-based theory and upper-echelon theory, this study proposes and tests a moderated mediation model. Green innovation transmits the effects of digital transformation and digital leadership on the triple-bottom-line dimensions of sustainability performance (economic, social, environmental), while green organizational culture amplifies those transmission pathways. Hypotheses were tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) with a two-step approach (445 employees from ISO 14001-certified textile-sector SME’s), ensuring robust validation of the proposed relationships. The findings reveal that green innovation serves as a significant mediator between digital transformation and digital leadership concerning sustainability performance. Additionally, green organizational culture is identified as a moderator that influences the relationship between green innovation and sustainability performance. The study extends RBT and UET by demonstrating that green innovation is the operative capability through which digital resources and leadership cognitions translate into triple-bottom-line outcomes. This pathway has previously been assumed but untested in resource-constrained emerging-market SMEs. The study encourages managers to adopt sustainable strategies that integrate digital transformation and leadership practices to foster firm development in an environmentally friendly manner. By promoting green innovation and cultivating a supportive organizational culture, SMEs can enhance their sustainability outcomes. This research highlights the importance of sustainable practices in the textile industry, which is crucial for addressing environmental challenges and promoting responsible business operations in emerging economies. This study contributes to the existing literature by integrating resource-based theory and upper-echelon theory to develop a quantitative model that addresses the gap in understanding how digitalization can lead to sustainability performance. By focusing on the specific context of Pakistani textile SMEs, it provides new insights into the interplay between digital leadership, digital transformation and sustainability practices.

BARRIERS AND DRIVERS OF DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION IN AGRICULTURAL ENTERPRISES: INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE AND LESSONS FOR UKRAINE

The article examines the relevance of digital transformation in agriculture under conditions of structural heterogeneity, institutional asymmetry, market volatility, and crisis-related disruptions, with a particular focus on Ukraine as a transitional and war-affected economy. Digitalisation is conceptualised not merely as a technological modernisation process, but as a systemic transformation that reshapes production models, governance mechanisms, and value-chain coordination within agri-food systems. In this context, digital technologies function as instruments of productivity growth, environmental sustainability, traceability compliance, and long-term sectoral resilience. The purpose of the study is to identify, compare, and systematise the key drivers and barriers influencing the adoption of digital technologies in agricultural enterprises across diverse international contexts, and to formulate analytically grounded and policy-relevant lessons for Ukraine. The research is based on comparative qualitative analysis of peer-reviewed international literature, thematic synthesis of technological, economic, organisational, and institutional determinants, and contextual assessment of global digitalisation models adapted to Ukrainian infrastructural, regulatory, and crisis-related realities. The findings demonstrate that barriers to digital transformation operate as an interconnected systemic configuration in which constraints in infrastructure, finance, governance, and human capital reinforce one another, thereby limiting the effectiveness of isolated or sector-specific interventions. The study also identifies distinct digitalisation trajectories in developed, emerging, and innovation-driven agricultural systems, revealing differences in policy coordination, innovation ecosystems, and market incentives. A novel concept of resilience-driven digitalisation is proposed to explain technology adoption under extreme uncertainty, where digital tools are implemented not primarily for efficiency gains but to ensure operational continuity, remote management, risk monitoring, and adaptive decision-making in crisis environments.

Global Research Development on Smart Village and Rural Digital Transformation: A Bibliometric Study

The concepts of Smart Village and rural digital transformation have gained increasing attention as strategic approaches to promoting sustainable rural development, reducing the digital divide, and enhancing community resilience in the digital era. Over the past decade, governments, international organizations, and researchers have increasingly emphasized the role of digital technologies in improving public services, economic opportunities, social inclusion, and governance in rural areas. This study aims to analyze the global development of research on Smart Village and rural digital transformation through a bibliometric approach. Data were collected from internationally indexed scientific publications and analyzed using performance analysis and science mapping techniques. The study examines publication trends, influential authors, countries, institutions, journals, citation structures, collaboration networks, and thematic evolution within the field. The findings reveal a significant increase in scholarly interest, particularly after 2018, driven by advances in digital technologies and growing policy attention to rural innovation. Major research themes include digital infrastructure, smart governance, rural sustainability, digital inclusion, community empowerment, smart agriculture, and rural entrepreneurship. Emerging topics such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), smart ecosystems, and data-driven rural development indicate the evolving nature of the field. The study contributes to the literature by providing a comprehensive overview of the intellectual structure and research trends related to Smart Village and rural digital transformation, while identifying future research opportunities to support sustainable and inclusive rural development.
