Abstract

We study an opinion optimization problem based on an extended DeGroot model for a social network, where stubborn leaders hold fixed opinions of 0 or 1. Given a set of leaders with opinion 0, our goal is to select a small number of leaders with opinion 1 from the remaining nodes to maximize the average opinion of the network. Previous studies mainly focus on undirected graphs, but real-world social networks are often directed. Therefore, it is essential to address the problem in directed graphs. To solve the problem, we first establish a novel interpretation of equilibrium opinions using random rooted spanning forests. Building on this interpretation, we propose a random spanning forest sampling greedy algorithm that leverages an extension of Wilson’s algorithm and a sample update technique, which is efficient and provides an error guarantee. Our algorithm applies to both undirected and directed graphs. Extensive experiments on real-world networks demonstrate that for undirected graphs our algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art method—achieving accuracy improvements of up to 42% and speedups of up to 80%. Moreover, for directed graphs our algorithm achieves comparable effectiveness to the deterministic greedy algorithm and is scalable to large directed graphs with millions of nodes, where the deterministic greedy algorithm is not scalable.

Opinion Maximization in Social Networks: An Inverse Optimization Perspective

Given a social network 𝒢 with n nodes and m edges, the opinion maximization (OM) problem aims at identifying k (k ≪ n) opinion leaders to maximize their opinion propagation in 𝒢. Despite its significance and prevalence, existing OM methods often struggle to strike a satisfactory balance between theoretical performance...

Optimal and heuristic strategies for evaluating the influence of coordinated behavior in information cascades and retweet networks

Coordinated Inauthentic Behavior (CIB) has become a major concern in online social platforms, yet its actual impact on information diffusion remains poorly understood. Existing research has primarily focused on detecting coordinated activity, while comparatively little attention has been devoted to quantifying its infl...

Influence Ranking Improvement via Link Addition in Social Networks

Social media platforms increasingly rely on influential users for information dissemination in domains such as marketing and political campaigns. As the value of being recognized as influential grows, users may have incentives to strategically enhance their influence. In this study, we investigate whether and to what e...

Majority dynamics on sparse random graphs

Consider a simple undirected graph $G$ on $N$ vertices, with each vertex holding an opinion from one of two options. Starting from the initial opinions on day 1, we run majority dynamics: on each subsequent day, all vertices simultaneously adopt the majority opinion among their neighbors, retaining their current opinio...

Influence Enhancement in Opinion Dynamics Using Edge Modification: A Kron Reduction-Based Approach

With the emergence of online social networks as a primary platform for advertising and advocacy, enhancing a user's influence has become of significant interest. In this paper, we investigate this problem under the Friedkin Johnsen opinion dynamics model, wherein stubborn agents influence the opinions of other agents i...
