Abstract

Simple Summary Tianzhu white yaks are multipurpose livestock that support pastoral communities on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, where animals must cope with cold, low oxygen, and seasonal feed shortages. Genetic variants associated with body weight and body size may help improve genetic evaluation. In this study, 536 Tianzhu white yaks were examined for two candidate genetic variants. Body weight, body height, body oblique length, and chest circumference were compared among animals carrying different forms of each variant after accounting for age and sex. One variant was associated with body weight, whereas the other was associated with body height, chest circumference, and body weight. Because the measurements were collected at a single time point, the results describe differences in body weight and body size rather than growth rate. In addition, these two candidate loci were identified in the same research population, so they still need to be further verified in the independent yak population. These two loci may therefore serve as candidates for subsequent genetic and functional studies, but their potential use in breeding requires further validation.

The Effects of SNPs in the LCORL and LTBP2 Genes on Comprehensive Performance Traits in Charolais Sheep

The Charolais sheep is a world‐renowned breed of meat sheep, known for its large frame, heavy muscling, and rapid growth. A novel breed, the Chao Mu meat sheep, has been developed by utilizing the Charolais sheep as the paternal line. This advancement has significantly contributed to the genetic enhancement and breedin...

GH-mRNA expression and prediction of genetic improvement using selection index for body weight traits in turkeys

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the expected responses to a selection index based on body-weight-related traits to improve the productive performance of turkeys and to investigate the relationship between body weight and growth hormone (GH) gene expression. Two lines of local Baladi turkeys were used: a selected...

The influence of SLCO2B1 gene polymorphisms on live weight in Manych Merino sheep

The study aimed to evaluate the association of SLCO2B1 gene polymorphisms with live weight in Manych Merino rams. Genotyping was performed using whole-genome sequencing (NovaSeq 6000) of 30 clinically healthy nine-month-old rams, randomly selected from three unrelated lines (relatedness coefficient ≤0.5). Mapping to th...

Association between the CHCHD7 gene variation and early growth performance in Kabakulak goats

Early growth performance is an important indicator of meat yield at slaughter in goats. However, it is influenced by numerous genetic and environmental factors. This study investigated the relationship between variations in the CHCHD7 gene and birth weight and live weight at 90th day in Kabakulak goats. The study was c...

Integrated Multi-Omics Analysis Reveals the Genetic Basis of Phenotypic Variation in Tibetan Sheep.

This study used genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to identify five single nucleotide polymorphisms significantly associated with body size in the Tibetan sheep population, advancing molecular breeding and providing a basis for genomic selection.
