Biology

TL;DR

Five positive-sense, single-stranded RNA (+ssRNA) viruses isolated from tropical seawater that infect green algae in the genus Tetraselmis are presented, making them the first viruses within the bounds of the Dicistroviridae family demonstrated to infect an organism other than arthropods.

Primer: Giant viruses of protists

This Primer provides an accessible overview of protist-infecting giant viruses, summarizing their classification, virion architecture, replication strategies, and evolutionary scenarios, and points to key questions that remain open.

The RNA virome of early metazoans sheds light on long-term virus-host relationships

These findings expand the known diversity and host range of several virus groups, and shed light on virus evolution in early metazoans, demonstrating both host jumping within aquatic environments and virus host-associations that may span the entirety of animal evolution.

Genetic Diversity of CRESS DNA Viruses in Rodent Virome

CRESS DNA viruses belong to a widely distributed and highly diverse group of viruses, which are often found during the analysis of viromes. However, data on their genetic diversity are still incomplete. The intestinal viromes of widespread vole species—northern red-backed vole and tundra vole—were sequenced. Based on t...

The biogeography of giant viruses and interactions with Eukaryotes across European lakes

Advances in genomics have revealed a diversity of nucleocytoplasmic large DNA viruses (phylum Nucleocytoviricota) that infect eukaryotes, but their ecology beyond the oceans remains poorly understood. We recover 208 Nucleocytoviricota genomes, including 205 putative new species and 33 novel virus-host linkages by sam...

Discovery of novel viruses related to the Potyviridae family reveals expanded diversity, a broad host range, and evidence of fungal and oomycete infections

These findings substantially expand the host range of Potyviridae, provide compelling evidence that potyvirid-like viruses likely infect fungi and oomycetes in nature, and offer new insights into the evolutionary pathways that have shaped this major virus family.

Oysters from five continents harbour a vast array of previously unknown RNA viruses, including many putative viruses of vertebrates

Oysters are vital to global aquaculture and marine ecosystems, yet, their associated RNA viruses remain largely unexplored. Here, we analysed ∼1,000 publicly available metatranscriptomic datasets from 13 oyster species across 14 countries and 5 continents to characterize the oyster RNA virome (ORV). We identified 1,515...
