Challenges in Bridging Pure and Applied Mathematics Trends for Future Innovations

Sep 2026 · International Journal of Creative and Open Research in Engineering and Management

Abstract

This study examines the opinions of mathematicians regarding the need to bridge pure and applied mathematics in the context of cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and climate modelling. It identifies notable disparities in perceived intellectual rigour, favouring pure mathematics and the social sciences, and favouring applied mathematics, based on a 15-item Likert-scale questionnaire administered to more than 80 researchers, educators, and practitioners. Key unifying issues are highlighted by factor analysis, and the results aim to enhance teamwork, support the innovative role of mathematics, and bridge perception gaps through targeted training. Keywords: Pure and Applied Mathematics, artificial intelligence, interdisciplinary collaboration, Euler and Gauss.

The impact of agile practices on communication in software development

The study shows that agile practices improve both informal and formal communication, but indicates that, in larger development situations involving multiple external stakeholders, a mismatch of adequate communication mechanisms can sometimes even hinder the communication.

What AI gets wrong and what failure teaches us

Jennifer Neville did not want to go into computer science—but that’s exactly where she landed. Neville discusses the starts and stops that led to her professional sweet spot and her work identifying “surprising failures” making it hard for AI to handle complexity.  The post What AI gets wrong and what failure teaches us appeared first on Microsoft Research.
