In New Zealand, approximately 195,000 children require mental health support, yet traditional care faces severe resource constraints and observer effects. CHATBOX is an interactive companion robot designed to deliver continuous, personalized, and non-judgmental emotional assistance. Powered by an edge-computing architecture (Jetson Nano) integrated with Large Language Models (GPT-4o mini), speech-to-text, emotion recognition, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), CHATBOX maintains contextual continuity across sessions. Its hardware features expressive mechanisms (eyes, eyebrows, ears, neck, arms) to foster emotional engagement. A live stream monitoring system provides real-time emotional insights to caregivers. Evaluated with 10 participants aged 10–16, the system demonstrated strong user acceptance, with participants highlighting its comforting, engaging, and cute presence.
