Determinants of cocoa farm sustainability based on social and economic costs

Abstract

Field issues obtained through survey results, field identification and conducting direct interviews with key informants, as well as cocoa farmers, then obtained the fact that there was a decrease in production and income obtained by cocoa farmers, so that with these conditions it is very worrying about the sustainability of their cocoa farming business, the root of the problem is the social and economic factors or variables or dimensions. Therefore, this study focuses or aims to analyze the factors or variables, or dimensions that determine the sustainability of social and economic-based farming businesses. This study uses a quantitative approach that refers to 2 social variables and 2 economic variables. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire and direct interviews with 50 cocoa farmer respondents. This research was conducted in Polewali Mandar Regency, West Sulawesi Province. The theoretical basis used in measuring this research is the analysis of sustainability in terms of increasing production and income with an analysis tool, namely the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method. The results of the study showed that, on average, social factors measured simultaneously obtained a value of sustainability of production increase from 2 measured variables, obtained a value of 0.78, including the category of unsustainable, and sustainability of income increase obtained a value of 0.94, including the category of unsustainable. While the economic factors measured simultaneously from production sustainability, there are 1 variable category, unsustainable obtained a value of 0.81, and 1 variable, sustainability of income increase obtained a value of 1.13, including the category of fairly sustainable.
