Abstract

The proposed quantum computing leads to an important security problem in classic key exchange methods for secure file communication. In this paper, we propose a Quantum Key Distribution based secure file encryption scheme for secure storage and transmission of files which uses BB84 Quantum Key Distribution protocol along with AES-GCM encryption. It is proposed that the system will approximate the generation of a quantum bit, basis selection, quantum transmission, key sifting, and an analysis of quantum bit error rate, to be able to establish a common cryptographic key between transmitting and receiving entities. In quantum transmission, a monitoring of disturbances caused during the transmission is done, which will detect eavesdropping when the error rate is abnormal. The quantum key produced is then subjected to further processing, such as authenticating encrypted data with AES, to provide confidentially, integrity and tamper resistance for upload files. The system further features user authentication, secure file packaging and a web-based interface for controlled access and practicality. The proposed framework integrates the principles of quantum key distribution (QKD) with a symmetric encryption system, enhancing its potential resilience against future quantum attacks, unlike traditional file encryption systems relying solely on classical key exchange protocols. The uniqueness is that they integrate three different concepts, BB84 key generation, QBER intrusion awareness and authenticated file encryption as they are all implemented in a single deployable security framework. In this work, a practical simulation-oriented approach for protecting files securely in the post-quantum era in domains where long-time data confidentiality is desired is presented.
