Abstract

RN-led vascular access teams effectively train residents in IJ CVCs. Structured didactic, simulation, and clinical rotation improved competence. Over 95 residents completed training with reported gains in confidence. Interdisciplinary education enhanced patient safety and infection prevention. Scalable model brings vascular access expertise into Graduate Medical Education. The establishment of Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs increases the demand for structured procedural training and supervision. At a large tertiary hospital in Northern California, gaps in standardized training for internal jugular central venous catheter (IJ CVC) and arterial catheter insertions were identified. A registered nurse–led vascular access team partnered with the GME department to address this need through a structured educational program. A descriptive implementation project was conducted. A structured curriculum was developed incorporating a four-hour didactic session, simulation-based training, and a supervised two-week clinical rotation. The curriculum emphasized ultrasound-guided vascular access techniques, sterile insertion practices, complication prevention, and evidence-based decision-making. Residents participated in hands-on training under the supervision of vascular access team registered nurses. Since program initiation, more than 95 residents have completed the didactic training, with a majority participating in the supervised clinical rotation. Resident feedback indicated improved confidence and perceived preparedness in performing bedside vascular access procedures. All respondents reported that the didactic and simulation components adequately prepared them for clinical application. This nurse-led educational model demonstrates the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing procedural competency within GME programs. The program supports patient safety initiatives, reinforces infection prevention practices, and offers a scalable framework for integrating vascular access nurse specialists into resident education.
