Abstract
Counting subgraph motifs is a fundamental kernel in large-scale graph analytics, yet square (4-cycle) estimation in dynamic graphs remains challenging due to combinatorial explosion and distributed state maintenance costs. We introduce SQUASH (SQUare Approximation via Sampling and High-performance communication), a distributed framework for streaming square estimation, and demonstrate both theoretically and empirically that the average error in square counting decreases inversely with the number of workers. The results indicate that utilizing approximately 1.5% of memory compared to the exact counterpart yields a relative error of about 1%. Additionally, it provides unbiased estimates with (ϵ, δ)-approximation guarantees. By leveraging Bernstein-type concentration, we prove that \(O(\frac{1}{p\epsilon ^2} \log \frac{1}{\delta })\) samples are sufficient for accurate estimation, where p is the closure probability of centered 3-path. For large-scale graphs in static settings, centered 3-path sampling reduces computation time by approximately three orders of magnitude relative to exact counting method having relative error of approximately 1%. Furthermore, we provide a rigorous communication analysis showing that volume is governed by the interplay between wedge generation rate and pair-space size, achieving sublinear growth with provable phase transitions. This exposes a principled three-way trade-off between estimation accuracy, memory, and communication cost. Experiments on graphs with up to 117M edges demonstrate that SQUASH maintains high accuracy while establishing a mathematically grounded solution for higher-order motif estimation at scale.
We present the first polynomial lower bounds for several fundamental problems in the distributed graph sketching model in the tiny-error regime, which includes deterministic algorithms as a special case. In the graph sketching model, every node sends a single message to the referee who does not have any prior knowledge...
A noise-robust communication primitive is introduced, Exam Mostly Set Disjointness, and an $\Omega\left(\frac{m}{t}\log\frac{1}{\delta}\right)$ one-way lower bound is proved, which yields the correct $\log(1/\delta)$ dependence.

A randomized data structure for undirected weighted graphs that are partially dynamic, i.e., that undergo either only edge insertions or only edge deletions is given, which follows from a simple stability principle for partially dynamic graphs.

Computing influence spread under the Independent Cascade (IC) model is #P-hard, and influence maximization is commonly approached using Monte Carlo or reverse-reachable-set sampling. We study IC diffusion on bounded-treewidth graphs. Using probability distributions over separator reachability relations, we obtain exact...
PBS is proposed and analyzed, a simple sublinear approximation algorithm for power-law graphs with parameter $\beta\in[2,3)$ that does not require any preprocessing, yet exhibits performance comparable to light index-based algorithms (of linear or sublinear index size).
Local PageRank algorithms seek sparse approximations with work independent of graph size. We give a deterministic algorithm for regularized personalized PageRank with additive objective accuracy $\epsilon$ in $\widetilde{\mathcal{O}}(1/(\rho\sqrt\alpha))$ local work, where $\alpha$ is the lazy teleportation parameter a...
