TL;DR

Thematic synthesis-based research findings indicate that the principle of social justice serves as a core motivation and fundamental goal of the movement and digital platforms have proven to provide powerful tools for narrative amplification, fostering solidarity among marginalized groups, and coordinating collective action in real time.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Obstacles to channeling conventional political aspirations and the prevalence of systemic discrimination in the public sphere are the background to this article. These issues trigger sociopsychological alienation, which drives the emergence of independent collective movements in cyberspace. The main focus of this theoretical study is to comprehensively explore the central role of social justice and teamwork in mapping the phenomenon of digital movements driven by a new generation of activists called The New Avengers. The research steps were carried out using a narrative literature review method that adopted the selection principles of the PRISMA framework. The secondary data screening procedure systematically synthesized twenty original scientific articles from Scopus, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar databases published over the past ten years. Thematic synthesis-based research findings indicate that the principle of social justice serves as a core motivation and fundamental goal of the movement. Digital platforms have proven to provide powerful tools for narrative amplification, fostering solidarity among marginalized groups, and coordinating collective action in real time. The main conclusion emphasizes that although cyberspace offers freedom of expression, the success of digital activism is heavily influenced by cyber structural barriers, the threat of antagonism, and the repressive dynamics of authoritarian networks. Activists are recommended to draft a strategy to strengthen critical media literacy and inclusive collaborative ethics to ensure the sustainability of the impact of social change.

The Role of Social Media in Building Global Solidarity: A Literature Review of Transnational Social Movements

The development of social media in today’s fast-paced and sophisticated era has created an important space for cross-border interaction. Such dynamics often give rise to the idea that digital platforms have an important impact in building global solidarity, especially transnational social movements. This study aims to analyze the role of social media as a flexible medium for cross-border struggles in solidarity. The research method used by the researcher is a literature review, primarily utilizing secondary data from various scientific-academic publications, NGO (Non-Government Organization) reports, and case analyses based on relevant documentation. This approach focuses on patterns in digital communication and online mobilization strategies, and their impact on social movement solidarity. The research assumption shows that social media not only accelerates the dissemination of information but also strengthens collective identity among interconnected global communities. However, there are several challenges, such as issue fragmentation, digital access inequality, and the risk of commodification, which can weaken the effectiveness of movements. In conclusion, social media plays a central role in building global solidarity and presents certain limitations that can be anticipated.

Digital Activism in the Brave Pink Hero Green Movement: Forms of Political Participation by Influencers and the Public on Social Media

This study aims to analyze the forms of digital political participation emerging from the involvement of influencers and the public in disseminating the Brave Pink-Hero Green visual campaign within the #ResetIndonesia movement on social media. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study collected data through in-depth interviews with six purposively selected informants, consisting of three influencers and three members of the public actively engaged in the campaign. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while source triangulation was used to ensure validity. The findings indicate that the Brave Pink-Hero Green campaign spread organically across social media platforms without formal organizational structures, driven by shared socio-political concerns and facilitated through visual symbols representing courage, solidarity, and criticism of government policies. Digital political participation is manifested through activities such as reposting content, changing profile pictures, sharing information, commenting, and engaging in online discussions. Influencers played a strategic role in amplifying messages, simplifying issues, and increasing public awareness, whereas the public contributed by extending message dissemination and fostering collective engagement. The interaction between influencers and the public reflects the characteristics of connective action and participatory culture, highlighting how digital media enables collaborative and decentralized political participation. This study contributes to the digital activism literature by examining visual symbol-based activism through the Brave Pink-Hero Green campaign, extending current understandings of digital political participation beyond hashtag-centered activism.

Researching Youth, Impact and Charismatic discourse: Reflection on Motivation, Risks and Impact in Online Authoritarian research

Researching authoritarian regimes throughout the world is marked by innumerable ethical, social and political challenges impacting the researchers as well as the researched. My research on ‘the discourse of charismatic authoritarian leader Narendra Modi and his discourse's impact on social cohesion among the youth’ brought up ethical and logistical issues that shaped my understanding of challenges as a researcher and pivots for future research in the Indian Sub-continent and beyond, especially in authoritarian1 and semi-authoritarian2 settings. This research comprised of two phases of data collection and analysis. The first comprised of secondary qualitative data which was extracted through YouTube and governmental websites and analysed through Discourse Historical Approach (DHA); the second phase comprised of surveys that were extracted through google forms. Being a part of the editorial team of the journal, this essay is a response to the journal’s theme adding to edition, ‘Research lifecycle: Motivations, Dead Ends and Impact’ reflecting on research motivations, ethical dilemmas, challenges, pivots and impact in an authoritarian or a highly politically sensitive field through my experiences as an online researcher in a polarised, semi-authoritarian society (India). The essay highlights how authoritarian contexts not only shape the research methods but also trust, and research impact.

From voluntary submission to reactive antifeminism: the appropriation and re-signification of tradwife discourse in manosphere communities

This study examines how manosphere communities appropriate and reframe the tradwife phenomenon to legitimize patriarchal values through narratives of individual freedom and personal choice. Using Critical Discourse Analysis, the study analyzes a corpus of YouTube and TikTok content focused on the Spanish influencer Roro Bueno and the associated audience interactions. The findings identify six recurring discursive strategies: discrediting feminism, validating the male gaze, promoting biological essentialism, endorsing anti-progressive narratives, romanticizing traditional gender roles, and sanctioning women who challenge conservative expectations. The analysis shows how these narratives normalize gender inequality while presenting traditional femininity as voluntary empowerment. Audience participation further amplifies these discourses, highlighting social media as a key space for the reproduction of gender ideologies among young people. The study contributes to research on digital cultures and gender by demonstrating how lifestyle content can function as a vehicle for contemporary antifeminist discourse, underscoring the importance of strengthening critical digital and media literacy within educational contexts.

The symbolic–substantive gap: institutional masculinity and the politics of hiring and promotion in sport management organizations

This study aimed to analyze the causes of persistent gender inequality in international sports governance decision-making spaces, despite progress made in the symbolic and numerical representation of women. A qualitative research approach was developed, based on secondary data analysis. First, a quantitative synthesis of statistics published between 2024 and 2026 by the International Olympic Committee, FIFA, International Federations, and the International Paralympic Committee was conducted, presented in an original comparative graph. Second, a qualitative meta-synthesis of five empirical studies on sports organizations was performed, coded using Acker's (1990) theory of gendered organizations and Kanter's (1977) theory of tokenism. The analysis was also based on Connell and Messerschmidt's (2005) concept of hegemonic masculinity and Kerfoot and Knights' (1998) interpretation of management as a masculinized managerial project. The results revealed a persistent gap between symbolic representation and effective access to power, as female participation reached levels close to parity in governing bodies and commissions, but decreased considerably in federation presidencies and coaching positions. A significant exception was identified within the Paralympic movement, where women constituted a majority in an administrative body. It is concluded that numerical equality does not guarantee an effective redistribution of power, making it necessary to strengthen institutional reforms and develop comparative studies that explain the organizational factors that favor substantial female participation in sports governance. Keywords: institutional masculinity; gendered organizations; sports management; tokenism; hegemonic masculinity; recruitment and promotion.
