TL;DR

This study enriches the species diversity of the Hymenostilbe clade and highlights the importance of integrating morphological and molecular data for accurate taxonomic identification.

Abstract

Abstract Two novel species, Ophiocordyceps yuanyangensis and O. gotrae, along with a new record, O. cylindrospora, parasitic on hymenopteran hosts, were collected in Yunnan, China. Morphological observations and multi-gene (nrSSU, nrLSU, tef-1α, rpb1, and rpb2) phylogenetic analyses confirmed their placement in the Hymenostilbe clade within the genus Ophiocordyceps. When compared with closely related species, O. gotrae is distinguished by a smaller fertile head and shorter asci, whereas O. yuanyangensis shows smaller fertile parts and asci but larger perithecia and part-spores. Phylogenetic evidence supports their recognition as distinct taxa. To date, 24 species in the Hymenostilbe clade have been reported parasitizing Hymenoptera. This study enriches the species diversity of the Hymenostilbe clade and highlights the importance of integrating morphological and molecular data for accurate taxonomic identification.

Molecular phylogeny and morphology reveal three new species and two new records of Trichoderma (Hypocreaceae, Hypocreales) from China

Abstract Species of Trichoderma are globally distributed across diverse ecosystems. In this study, four Trichoderma strains were isolated from Ophiocordyceps jinguangensis, two from O. sinensis, and two from Dracaena sp. To determine their taxonomic placement, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses of ITS,...

Taxonomic and phylogenetic studies reveal three new species of corticioid fungi (Russulales, Basidiomycota) from Yunnan Province, Southwestern China

Detailed morphological characteristics and a two-marker phylogenetic inference using the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacers and the large subunit (nrLSU) gene revealed three new species in Russulales, viz., Gloeocystidiellum tenuissimum, Vararia farinacea and V. ruiliensis.

Morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses revealed Ossicaulis gansuensis sp. nov. (Lyophyllaceae, Basidiomycota) from Northwest China

A new species, Ossicaulis, O. gansuensis, collected from the Qilian Mountains Natural Protection Station in Gansu Province, China, is described and illustrated. Its taxonomic position is established through morphological observations and phylogenetic analyses of multi-gene sequences (ITS+LSU+tef1-α+rpb2). Morphological...

A new species and a new geographical record of Codinaea (Chaetosphaeriaceae) from Yunnan, China

A survey of lignicolous freshwater fungi in Yunnan Province, China, resulted in the collection of two hyphomycetous Codinaea species from submerged decaying wood: one new species and one new geographical record. Through detailed morphological examination and phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU, and tef1-α sequen...

Phylogenetic analyses and morphological studies reveal two new species of Biscogniauxia (Xylariales, Ascomycota) from Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, China

Abstract The species diversity of the family Graphostromataceae is poorly understood in tropical regions. The present work concerns a survey of wood-inhabiting macrofungi from the Hainan Tropical Rainforest, which is located in south-central Hainan Province. This study introduces two new species of Biscogniauxia, viz.,...

Three new species of Colletotrichum (Glomerellaceae, Glomerellales) based on morphology and multilocus phylogeny from Fujian, China

Three new species of Colletotrichum are formally proposed, indicating that additional undescribed Colletotrichum taxa remain to be uncovered from subtropical plant hosts across China, which will enrich genus-level species diversity and support native plant conservation and anthracnose disease management.
