Post-event optical stereo DEMs (WorldView-2, WorldView Legion 2/3, WorldView-3) for the 2026-08-26 Rasuwa (Langtang Lirung) ice-rock avalanche, Nepal

Sep 2026 · Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)

Abstract

This record provides digital elevation models (DEMs) from post-event optical stereo satellite images following the 2026-08-26 ice-rock avalanche on the north flank of Langtang Lirung, Rasuwa District, Nepal. The DEMs were produced from Vantor WorldView-2, WorldView-3 and WorldView Legion 2/3 stereo images acquired 2026-08-27 through 2026-09-08. The record includes pair DEMs (WorldView-2, WorldView Legion 2/3), multi-view DEM composites for WorldView-2 and WorldView-3, a post-event composite of all sources, and two elevation-change maps. All products are cloud-optimized GeoTIFFs in EPSG:32645 (WGS 84 / UTM zone 45N) with heights above the WGS 84 ellipsoid, posted at 2 m. The DEMs are co-registered to a common pre-event reference surface; users may wish to perform their own co-registration for their application. License: CC BY-NC 4.0. Products File suffixes: _dem single pair DEM; _ordered priority-ordered composite; _wmean weighted-mean composite; _hs hillshade; _ordered_source input that supplies each pixel of the ordered composite (listed in _ordered_source_index.csv); _count number of inputs per pixel. Nodata is -9999 in elevation, elevation-change and count layers and 0 in hillshade and source layers. 00_*_preview.png files are quick-look figures. 1.1 Input images Eleven Vantor Level-1B images. Satellite azimuth is from the target to the satellite. Methods DEMs were generated from the Level-1B images with the NASA Ames Stereo Pipeline (ASP 3.8.0-alpha; Beyer et al., 2018; Shean et al., 2016). The WorldView-3 and WorldView Legion 3 images were orthorectified onto the Copernicus GLO-30 DEM before correlation, with the stereo processing settings described in Bhushan and Shean (2021) and Shugar et al. (2021). DEMs were co-registered by translation to a common pre-event reference surface on stable ground, excluding surfaces that changed during and following the 2026-08-26 event. Each WorldView Legion 3 DEM was co-registered to an initial WorldView-3 median composite. Composites were built with dem_mosaic as priority-ordered and weighted-mean mosaics. 3. Known issues Partly cloudy images: DEMs created from coverage gaps in at least two images, with possible artifacts near cloud edges. The 2026-08-27 WorldView-3 median composite is less reliable where few pairs overlap (see its count layer); its southernmost ~2.5 km (one pair) is biased high. Steep, shadowed or texture-poor terrain has gaps and localized errors. Pair DEMs and the WorldView-3 median keep their native grids, offset from the other products by a fraction of a pixel. 4. The impact of agile practices on communication in software development

What AI gets wrong and what failure teaches us

Jennifer Neville did not want to go into computer science—but that’s exactly where she landed. Neville discusses the starts and stops that led to her professional sweet spot and her work identifying “surprising failures” making it hard for AI to handle complexity.  The post What AI gets wrong and what failure teaches us appeared first on Microsoft Research.
