The Symbolism of the Trumpet in Chinese Musical Culture: Traditional Meanings and Aesthetic In-terpretations
Abstract
This article presents a philosophical and aesthetic analysis of the symbolism of the trumpet in Chinese musical culture, highlighting its ritual, acoustic, and metaphysical dimensions. The trumpet is examined not merely as a musical instrument, but as a cultural signifier embedded in ceremonial, social, and artistic contexts. Drawing upon historical and contemporary examples, the study explores the instrument’s role in traditional Chinese ensembles, where it serves as an axis of sonic contrast and harmonic balance, as well as its symbolic presence in funeral processions, festive rituals, and modern cultural productions. Special attention is paid to the sound philosophy associated with the trumpet, particularly the aesthetic value of silence, pause, and emptiness, which evoke an experience of transcendence and interpretative openness. Through an interdisciplinary perspective, the article reveals the trumpet as a bearer of deeply rooted cultural meanings, contributing to the broader symbolic order of Chinese musical and aesthetic thought.
