Abstract

Mobile network data represent one of the most powerful emerging sources for large-scale mobility analysis. This paper proposes a complete data-driven pipeline to understand, detect, and predict population movement patterns within a region using anonymized origin–destination data provided by mobile phone operators. The dataset, covering 60 consecutive days in 2019, reports millions of daily flows between census areas together with demographic information. We conduct extensive exploratory analysis, develop a Z-score anomaly detection method capable of capturing event-driven disruptions, and design a regression model achieving a regional-scale MAPE around 10% in inbound-flow forecasting. Finally, we develop a decision-support application for a tourist municipality in the region enabling local authorities to gain insights into movement flows and make informed decisions for planning, management, and response to mobility-related events.

From mobility traces to process networks: evidence of structural heterogeneity in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area

Typically, past works on urban mobility have leveraged origin–destination analysis to capture where people travel, often leaving the sequence and structure of their trips unaddressed, thereby limiting the diagnosis of accessibility inequalities. We address this gap by integrating process mining and network science, a...

From signals to statistics: Measuring same-day visits with MNO data. An Italian use case

Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) data integration into official statistics offers new opportunities for measuring tourism flows. Compared with traditional surveys, MNO data provide broader population coverage, finer spatial and temporal detail, and near real-time availability. These features make them well suited to ana...

Integrating Cellular Mobility With Geographic Topology for Real-Time Pandemic Surveillance

While facilitating communication services, cellular mobile networks also provide real-time and large-scale observations of individual mobility, offering significant potential far beyond their traditional connectivity role. This paper proposes a mobility-aware epidemiological framework that integrates the Susceptible-Ex...

From Open Mobility Data to Urban Analytics: An Interactive Platform for Exploring Cycling Patterns in Valencia

This article presents the Bike Urban Analytics Platform (BUAP), an open-source platform integrating historical and real-time cycling data for urban mobility analysis and decision support. BUAP uses historical data covering 2012–2024 (with partial coverage for 2024) from Valencia’s expanding network of inductive loop de...
