TL;DR

Despite extensive research over the years, additional case-control studies are necessary to elucidate radon’s involvement in non-pulmonary diseases and to enhance risk assessment models.

Abstract

Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, poses a significant environmental health risk and ranks as the second leading cause of lung cancer following smoking. Prolonged exposure to radon and its decay products results in DNA damage due to ionizing radiation, which facilitates mutations, genomic instability, and the development of cancer. Epidemiological research, especially among miners and in residential environments, consistently reveals a dose-response relationship between radon exposure and the risk of lung cancer. Additionally, emerging evidence indicates potential associations with other illnesses, such as leukemia and non-respiratory cancers, although these connections are not yet fully established. At the cellular level, exposure to radon triggers oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, apoptosis, and immune dysregulation, which may act as biomarkers for diseases related to radon. Preventive measures emphasize the importance of radon measurement, mitigation efforts in homes and workplaces, and public health campaigns aimed at reducing exposure. Despite extensive research over the years, additional case-control studies are necessary to elucidate radon’s involvement in non-pulmonary diseases and to enhance risk assessment models.

Residential Radon Exposure and Lung Cancer Prevention in Canadian Primary Care: A Narrative Review and Practice Algorithm

Residential radon is an invisible radioactive gas produced during the uranium-238 decay series and is an established cause of lung cancer. In Canada, recent national surveillance suggests that about one in five residential buildings may exceed the national radon guidelines, yet household testing remains uncommon. This...

Radon Detection in Drinking Water: Instruments and Measurement Techniques—A Comprehensive Review

Radon (222Rn) is a naturally occurring radioactive noble gas and a leading cause of lung cancer after tobacco smoking. Elevated concentrations in groundwater, mainly from uranium-rich geological formations, pose significant health risks in regions reliant on groundwater. This review critically examines current tools an...

Residential radon concentration and the risk of malignant brain and central nervous system cancer in United States postmenopausal women

Background Central nervous system (CNS) cancers, including brain cancer, are rare but highly lethal, and risk factors remain poorly understood. Radon, a known lung carcinogen, may affect non-pulmonary sites, including the CNS. Methods We estimated the radon-related hazard of incident malignant CNS cancer in a large Uni...

Evaluation of the health risks associated with radon levels for water samples in Al-Diwaniyah, Iraq

Water is essential to life, making its preservation from environmental radioactive pollutants, particularly radon gas, critically important. To address this, regular water testing and contaminant health assessments are needed to address this. periodic water testing and assessment of pollutant impacts on human health ar...
