Agroforestry as a Tool for Environmental Sustainability and Rural Development in Nigeria

Aug 2026 · International Journal of Agriculture and Earth Science · 0 citations

Abstract

Nigeria faces numerous environmental challenges, including deforestation, land degradation, biodiversity loss, soil erosion, and the adverse effects of climate change. These challenges have significant implications for agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods, given that a substantial proportion of the population depends on agriculture for survival. Agroforestry, which integrates trees, crops, and livestock within the same land-use system, has emerged as a sustainable land management strategy capable of addressing environmental and socioeconomic challenges simultaneously. This paper examines the role of agroforestry in promoting environmental sustainability and rural development in Nigeria. The paper highlights the contributions of agroforestry to soil conservation, carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, and sustainable agricultural production. It further discusses the socioeconomic benefits of agroforestry, including income diversification, employment generation, food security enhancement, and poverty reduction among rural households. Despite its numerous advantages, the adoption of agroforestry in Nigeria is constrained by factors such as inadequate extension services, limited access to credit, poor policy support, and insufficient awareness among farmers. The paper concludes that agroforestry represents a viable pathway for achieving sustainable environmental management and rural development in Nigeria and recommends strengthened policy frameworks, increased farmer education, and institutional support to enhance its adoption.
