Unveiling the Healing Potential of Moringa oleifera: A Modern Review of Its Phytochemistry and Medicinal Properties
Abstract
Moringa oleifera, known as the drumstick tree or miracle tree, has attracted significant scientific attention for its exceptional nutritional value and medicinal benefits. For centuries, various parts of the plant have been used in traditional medicine to manage inflammation, infections, diabetes, anemia, and various chronic illnesses. Recent research has confirmed the healing potential of this plant because of biologically active compounds like flavonoids, phenolic acids, alkaloids, glucosinolates, tannins, and isothiocyanates. These phytochemicals lead to a wide range of pharmacological effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, liver-protective, heart-protective, and antidiabetic actions. Studies show that Moringa oleifera can reduce oxidative stress, suppress inflammatory mediators, inhibit microbial growth, and regulate cellular pathways linked to cancer progression. Besides its medicinal uses, the plant is also highly nutritious, offering a rich supply of vitamins, minerals, proteins, and essential amino acids. While experimental studies strongly support its therapeutic benefits, more clinical research and standardization are needed to determine safety, long-term effectiveness, and pharmaceutical uses. This review gives an updated overview of the phytochemical makeup, therapeutic value, and pharmacological effects of Moringa oleifera, emphasizing its growing role in modern healthcare and research on natural products.
