SUSTAINABLE ECO-FRIENDLY PERVIOUS CONCRETE PAVEMENT TECHNOLOGY: A REVIEW

The utilization of pervious concrete in roads without heavy traffic loads projects has gained relevance in recent years due to its favorable environmental impacts. This study reviews recent developments and trends in pervious concrete, focusing on its mechanical and hydrological properties. It also addresses component selection, mix design strategies, and the quality assurance and evaluation processes necessary for the effective performance of pervious concrete pavements. The literature review reveals that pervious concrete consists of interconnected voids and pores, exhibiting a porosity between 15% and 35%, and a compressive strength ranging from 2.8 MPa to 28 MPa. Research indicates that the highest performance is achieved with water-to-cement ratios between 0.26 and 0.45 and aggregate sizes ranging from 19 mm to 9.5 mm. Moreover, it has been determined that adding 5–10% of fine aggregate by total aggregate volume improves the concrete's strength and durability. Despite its environmental benefits, it still presents certain limitations that must be addressed. One key solution lies in developing an optimized mix design method, which could enhance the performance of pervious concrete pavement. Such advancement would support its role as a sustainable, dual-function pavement system and expand its applicability for low and medium- volume traffic networks.
