Social Cohesion Through Participatory Patriotism: A Thematic Analysis on the Role of Volunteering and Cross-Ethnic Interaction Among University Students
Although contemporary university campuses are increasingly diverse, the internalization of patriotic values among students often remains superficial and confined to seasonal national symbols. This limitation is compounded by persistent self segregation and social polarization, which continue to obstruct organic cross-ethnic interactions. To address this gap, this study examines how volunteerism and cross-ethnic interaction conceptualized as 'participatory patriotism' can strengthen social cohesion. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were gathered through the triangulation of in-depth interviews with three academic experts and nine undergraduate students. The thematic analysis identified four primary outcomes: the necessity of shifting from symbolic patriotism to tangible social and environmental action; the efficacy of volunteerism in mitigating prejudice; the requirement for structured interventions to target campus polarization; and the role of cross-cultural literacy and constitutional awareness in fostering identity resilience. The study concludes that achieving sustainable ethnic harmony demands a paradigm shift from passive classroom learning to proactive field engagement, demonstrating that a participatory patriotism approach offers a highly practical and effective instrument for social integration.
