Impact of Planning on Organizational Performance of a Manufacturing Industry: A Case Study in Ethiopia

This study examined the impact of strategic and operational planning on the organizational performance of a selected manufacturing company in Ethiopia. Using a mixed-methods research design, data were collected from 120 employees, including managers, department heads, and production supervisors, through structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between effective planning practices, such as goal setting, resource allocation, production scheduling, and contingency planning, and key performance indicators, including productivity, cost efficiency, on-time delivery, and employee output. Pearson correlation analysis showed a strong positive relationship (r = 0.68, p < 0.01) between planning comprehensiveness and overall organizational performance. However, challenges such as unpredictable regulatory changes, supply chain disruptions, foreign currency shortages, inflation, and limited planning skills hindered the achievement of optimal outcomes. The study concludes that planning is a critical driver of manufacturing performance in the Ethiopian context, but its effectiveness depends on environmental adaptability, management commitment, and employee involvement. Recommendations include investing in planning training, adopting flexible rolling forecasts, integrating risk assessment into routine planning, and establishing cross-functional planning committees
