Functional dedifferentiation is distinguished from epithelial–mesenchymal transition, stemness, and lymph-node metastasis, and therapeutic strategies that combine tumor-cell redifferentiation with targeting of microenvironmental feedback to restore durable radioiodine sensitivity are discussed.
