Assessment of Heavy-metal Pollution and Ecological Risk in Soils and Water of Oil-field Communities in Delta State, Nigeria, Using Integrated Pollution Indices

Petroleum exploration and production can alter the geochemical quality of surrounding soils and water through the introduction and redistribution of potentially toxic metals. This study assessed the degree of heavy-metal pollution and associated ecological risk in soils and water from the Apkai and Umusedege oil-field...

Geochemical Fractionation, Mobility and Environmental Risk of Lead, Cadmium and Zinc in Agricultural Soils from an Abandoned Mining Area in Jos-South, Nigeria

The total amount of a potentially toxic element in soil, on its own, provides limited information about its mobility or bioavailability. This paper re-examines the geochemical partitioning, extractability and environmental status of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) in agricultural soils surrounding abandoned minin...

Heavy-metal Contamination of Soils and Water in the Apkai and Umusedege Oil-field Communities, Ndokwa East and Ndokwa West, Delta State, Nigeria

Petroleum exploration and production can introduce potentially toxic metals into the soils and water bodies of host communities, with consequences for both ecosystem integrity and human exposure. This study assessed the concentrations and distribution of ten heavy metals: Ni, Cr, Cu, Co, Pb, Cd, Fe, Mn, As and Zn in so...

Integrated Human Health and Radiological Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals and Naturally Occurring Radionuclides in Soil and Water from Oil

Water showed elevated gross alpha/beta activity and associated doses alongside the dominant adult dermal hazard quotient, and therefore warrants continued radiological and chemical monitoring, more targeted radionuclide-specific follow-up, and independent verification of the adult water-dermal exposure calculation.
