Optogenetic control of actin crosslinker length reveals a mechanical basis for cortical symmetry breaking

It is shown that short and mid-length crosslinkers dynamically tune cortical stiffness and thickness in a density- and myosin-dependent manner, with short crosslinkers also driving pronounced stress-stiffening as the cortex is deformed.

The membrane-to-cortex distance regulates mDia1 activity to control cortical mechanics

The shape of animal cells is controlled by their surface, which comprises the cell cortex, a peripheral actin network, tethered to the plasma membrane by membrane-to-cortex attachment proteins. Changes in cortical components have long been considered to dominate the regulation of forces and mechanical properties at the...

Softer when Thicker: a Conserved Scaling Law Governs Actin Cortex Mechanics

Scaling laws are powerful tools in material science to relate geometric and mechanical properties of materials. The actin cortex, a dynamic network beneath the plasma membrane, is essential for cellular morphogenesis, force generation, and tissue organization. Despite its critical role, the mechanical properties of the...

Designing corrugated surfaces to guide colloidal self-assembly

The self-assembly of colloidal particles enables the creation of structured materials with programmable functionalities; however, controlling interaction specificity and aggregate morphology in a reversible and scalable manner remains a major challenge. Here, we investigate the selective depletion-induced self-assembly...
