Bait, Wait, Isolate: Can You Catch Phytophthora in Your Neck of the Woods?
Phytophthora species are an important genus of plant pathogens that have global ecological, cultural, and economic impacts. While some species are endemic and are relatively benign, others can cause devastating disease outbreaks that alter plant communities, reduce biodiversity, and threaten food and forest systems. Because disease management options are extremely limited once an invasive Phytophthora species becomes established, early detection is essential for reducing risks. Baiting methods offer a practical, reliable, and low-cost method to detect Phytophthora species in both natural and cultivated environments. Baits use plant tissue from known Phytophthora hosts, which attracts the invasion of the pathogen if it is present in the system under evaluation. Once the bait is colonized, further testing, such as immunoassays or DNA sequencing, can be used to confirm the presence or identity of the isolated organism. Baiting requires minimal equipment or technical training, and is adaptable for detection in soil, water, and canopy environments.
