Influence of Green Procurement Practices on Environmental Compliance in Public Universities in Nairobi City County, Kenya

Purpose: This study sought to examine the influence of green procurement practices on environmental compliance in public universities in Nairobi City County, Kenya. The specific objectives were to examine the influence of green purchasing policies, supplier environmental evaluation, eco-friendly product selection, and waste reduction and recycling practices on environmental compliance. Methodology: The target population comprised 190 officers drawn from procurement, environmental management, facilities management, and administrative functions across seven public universities in Nairobi County. Proportional stratified random sampling was used to select 129 respondents. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaires. Validity was ensured through expert review, while reliability was assessed through pilot testing procedures. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis, and the findings were presented in tables. Findings: The regression results showed that the four independent variables jointly explained 75.9 percent of the variation in environmental compliance, indicating that green procurement practices are strong predictors of environmental compliance in public universities. Unique Contribution to Theory Practice and Policy: University management and procurement departments should develop, update, and fully institutionalize comprehensive green purchasing policies that explicitly integrate environmental criteria into procurement planning, specification development, tendering, and contract management.
