Determinants of Electric Vehicle Adoption Intention: A Partial UTAUT2 Framework in an Emerging Economy
Expanding the use of electric vehicles (EVs) is now viewed as a vital component in establishing environmentally friendly transport frameworks. Despite technological advancements and policy support, the rate of adoption in developing countries continues to be relatively low. This research aims to investigate the factors influencing the intention to adopt EVs by utilizing the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2). Data were collected from 470 individuals in Bali, Indonesia, through a structured questionnaire. The study employed Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) as the primary analytical tool to evaluate the collected data. The findings demonstrate that behavioral intention toward EV ownership is significantly influenced by performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and price value. Among these factors, price value emerged as the strongest predictor, followed by effort expectancy, social influence, and performance expectancy. The proposed model explains 34.4% of the variance in behavioral intention. These findings suggest that financial considerations play a crucial role in shaping EV adoption intentions in emerging economies, while usability and social factors provide additional support. The study contributes to the existing literature by demonstrating that a streamlined UTAUT2 framework can effectively explain adoption behavior for high-involvement technologies. The practical implications emphasize the importance of financial incentives, accessible charging infrastructure, and strategies that leverage social influence to promote the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.
