Escape of the BC200 gene to a human poxvirus reveals its persistent transposition in primates.

Transposable elements mobilize within and occasionally between genomes, including from host to virus. We identified two insertions of the human BC200 noncoding RNA gene in the poxvirus molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV), which were likely acquired through long interspersed nuclear element 1 (LINE-1 or L1)-mediated retro...

Soil‐derived, gut‐dominant generalist bacteria shape the fitness of folivorous larvae

Whether Lepidoptera harbor a conserved core gut microbiome has long remained contentious. Through large‐scale microbiome profiling of folivorous larvae, their host plants, and associated soils across three climatically distinct regions of China, we identify two soil‐derived generalist bacteria, Ralstonia insidiosa and...

The Adaptive Roles of Active Transposable Elements in Insect Hosts.

It is argued that while host silencing mechanisms, such as the piRNA pathway, tightly regulate TE activity to minimize harmful effects, the context-dependent activation of active TEs can generate beneficial genetic variation that enhances insect adaptations to anthropogenic and climatic pressures.
