The influence of social determinants of health on heat illness prevention and seeking/trusting information sources among Florida residents

Heat-related illnesses (HRIs) are a growing public health concern, particularly in the context of global climate change. Vulnerable populations, such as agricultural and outdoor workers, face disproportionate risks of HRIs. This study investigates associations between social determinants of health (SDOH) profiles and prevention behaviors, trust in information sources, and frequency of information-seeking related to extreme heat among Florida residents. Using a Bayesian Profile Regression (BPR) approach, we identified four clusters based on six sociodemographic and contextual variables from an online survey administered to 500 Florida residents, including income, education, race/ethnicity, occupation, political orientation, and urban/rural status. Logistic regression models were then used to examine associations between these clusters and key HRI-related outcomes. Cluster 3, characterized by low income, low education, rural residency, agricultural work, and high proportions of Hispanic and Black people, showed elevated odds of low prevention and distrust in institutional information sources. Clusters 2 and 4 demonstrated more selective distrust of government-affiliated platforms. These findings underscore the need for targeted, culturally responsive health communication strategies tailored to the diverse SDOH profiles influencing heat-related vulnerability. Social determinants of health profiles are associated with differences in prevention behaviors and trust in information sources during extreme heat. Populations characterized by lower income, lower education, and rural/agricultural backgrounds may experience greater heat-related vulnerability, highlighting the need for culturally responsive and targeted communication strategies.

Real-World Effectiveness and Impact of Human Papillomavirus Vaccination in Males: A Comprehensive Review.

BACKGROUND Gender-neutral vaccination (GNV) for human papillomavirus (HPV) has increasingly been implemented worldwide. However, real-world evidence on vaccine effectiveness (VE) in males and the population-level impact of GNV remains heterogeneous. We summarized real-world VE of HPV vaccination in males and the impact of GNV. METHODS A comprehensive review was performed using Embase and PubMed from January 2007 to May 2024, for studies evaluating quadrivalent (4vHPV) or nonavalent (9vHPV) vaccines. Eligible studies assessed VE or GNV impact on HPV infections, precancerous lesions, cancer, or anogenital warts (AGW). Risk of bias was assessed using ROBINS-I and the National Institute of Health quality assessment tool. RESULTS Twenty-one geographically diverse studies were included. Most VE and VI studies demonstrated risk of bias. In males, VE reached up to 100% against oral HPV infection and 41% for penile HPV (4vHPV genotypes), with higher VE among adolescents and those vaccinated before age 23. Among men who have sex with men, VE was higher for penile HPV infection (85%), AGW (55%), and anal infection (60%). CONCLUSIONS Real-world evidence indicates that HPV vaccination substantially reduces anogenital and oral HPV infections and AGW in males. GNV programs further reduce HPV-related disease burden, reinforcing the public health significance of universal HPV vaccination programs worldwide.
