Transforming the textile industry through sustainable innovation: The case of Jeanologia
This teaching case examines Jeanologia, a Spanish technology company that has transformed the global textile industry through sustainable innovation. Founded in 1994, the firm has developed technologies such as laser, ozone, water-treatment, and digital impact-measurement solutions—that reduce the environmental footprint of denim production. The case explores how Jeanologia integrates a purpose-driven mission into its business model, aligning innovation, sustainability, and economic performance. Particular attention is given to the concept of enabled impact , defined as the environmental and sustainability outcomes generated by third-party organizations through the adoption of the company's technologies. By distinguishing between direct environmental impacts and those enabled across customers’ operations and value chains, the case raises important questions of attribution and additionality. Students are invited to analyze challenges related to business model design, innovation diffusion, impact measurement, and the tensions between growth, profitability, investor expectations, and mission preservation.
