Riesgo promedio a 5 años de cáncer de mama en mujeres de un centro rural de atención primaria en República Dominicana

Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women and one of the leading causes of death. Genetic factors, including BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations, significantly increase the risk, highlighting the importance of evaluating this issue in communities with limited access to healthcare services. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted, including 134 women aged 35 to 85 years registered at a rural health center in Catalina. A survey and the Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool were used to estimate breast cancer risk. Data was collected by the authors and analyzed using Excel. Study quality was ensured by controlling possible errors. Results: The average risk of breast cancer was 0.80% over five years and 6.24% over a lifetime, lower than what has been reported in other countries. Based on reproductive and family history, the studied sample was classified as a low-risk group, considering that the sociodemographic profile suggests potential barriers to early detection. Conclusions: The study showed a low risk of breast cancer, associated with protective factors and a vulnerable sociodemographic profile. Limitations include its cross-sectional design, single-center sample, and potential information bias due to the data collection tool used.
