INTELLIGENT ENERGY METERING SYSTEM TO DIFFERENTIATE GRID AND GENERATOR POWER SOURCES FOR ACCURATE BILLING

This research addresses a significant challenge in housing societies: the inability of conventional meters to differentiate between electricity consumption from the main grid and local diesel generators, resulting in inaccurate billing. Focusing on the housing society at the University of Gujrat, Authors developed an intelligent energy meter capable of recording power usage from both sources separately. Utilizing Arduino technology, the smart meter features inputs for local generators and main grid supply. A straightforward algorithm monitors power usage through current transformers (CTs) and measures voltage levels via potential transformers (PTs). The Arduino UNO microcontroller processes the data, distinguishing energy sources and displaying real-time consumption on an LCD screen, ensuring seamless integration of hardware and software components. Results demonstrate that the intelligent energy meter significantly enhances precision in monitoring power usage, facilitating accurate billing based on actual consumption. This research paper represented a transformative solution in energy management, addressing billing inefficiencies and promoting efficient energy utilization in residential and industrial zones. Future enhancements may include remote data communication, a user-friendly mobile application, and the implementation of advanced tariff plans.
